The State of Vermont, through the Vermont Mapping Program, will be securing new aerial photography of Grand Isle, Franklin, Orleans counties and surrounding areas this spring. The aerial photography is designed to be used to generate new digital aerial maps of the respective areas. These rectified digital aerial maps are Orthophotographs. They will have the accuracy of a map but the look of an aerial photograph.
Our window to secure the new aerial photography is 15 April to 15 May. The window only allows a few hours over noon, when the sun is highest in the sky. No leaves on the trees, no snow on the ground, no clouds in the sky are allowed when we take the aerial photographs.
In order to convert the raw aerial photography into orthophotographs, we need a connection between the coordinate values on earth and aerial photography. Thus, we mark our survey control points with an “x” or “t” (referred to as “Targets”). These targets are usually made of white plastic; each leg is 3 feet wide by 15 feet long.
In the 55 municipalities being photographed this spring, we will place a total of 37 targets. The targets will be picked up by Vtrans staff after the aerial photography has been secured.
PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB THE TARGETS
Per Vermont statute, two copies of the respective Orthophotographs are given to each municipality as
well as available to the general public. The new orthophotography should be available and delivered to the above municipalities in the Winter of 2008/2009.
