Tick Info for people who missed the meeting

Hello Everyone -

For those who couldn't make the tick/lyme disease meeting a few weeks back (like us), here are some highlights forwarded to us by David Bray.

* They are here to stay.
* Everyone needs to be aware and know what to look for.
* David has packets of info at the camp for interested people. Corliss Blakely & Berry also have packets at the South End. Judy Towers may have an extra one or two packets.
* All visiting pets should be treated with Front Line, not the other stuff as it doesn't do what is advertised.
* It was suggested that as a group we purchase mice feeders to place around out camps. They need to be placed every 50 feet around the perimeter of the property. They can only be installed by a licensed pest control person and cost about $20 to $30 each. Not sure who was going to look into that project.
* If you find a tick, remove it by:
* using needle nose tweezers. * Grab it as close to the head as possible and lift up slowly. Even if the head stays in it is OK. * Wipe down with alcohol. * DO NOT squeeze the body of the tick. * DO NOT burn the tick with a match. * Do not put ointment on the tick to get it to back out. All you'll accomplish it to have it vomit into you all of the poison.
* It takes about 48 hours of contact with an infected tick to have the Lyme Disaease transfered into your body. By performing daily full body tick inspections you should be safe even if you are bitten by an infected tick.
* Body inspection stations will be set up around the island.
* There is much more good info contained in the brochures we have at the island.

Fyi - and does anyone know who was looking into the mice feeders?

Regards,

Steve
