How do I post photos in the Gallery?
These directions guide you through the process of adding photos to the gallery on this
website using a tool called "Gallery Remote." If you don't want to install Gallery Remote to
upload photos, you don't have to. Gallery Remote just makes the process easier -- especially
since it can do nice things like resizing images before uploading them to the server.
The process works like this (the first time, subsequent times you can start Gallery Remote
and begin from step 8):
You need to be on-line while doing all of this and this seems like a lot of directions, but
once you've set up Gallery Remote the first time, it's really easy to use thereafter.
- Register for an account like so:
- Go to the Gallery.
- In the gray bar right below the "Search" field, click on "register". This will open a
popup window.
- Create a username, provide your full name and email address. When you hit the "create"
button, it will send you an email that will have your login info and at that point you'll
be registered.
- At this point you'll be able to add pictures to albums that already exist once you are
logged into Gallery (see next step). We can give your account privileges to add entirely new
albums. Contact us if you need assistance, but if we know who
you are we will give your account this privilege within a day or two of you registering.
- Go to the Gallery application (http://www.butlerisland.org/gallery/) and make sure you can
login with your new account -- look for the "login" link. If you see "Welcome, YOUR NAME HERE"
in the gray bar, you are already logged in -- continue with the next step.
- Download Gallery Remote
and install it. Most users want the version for Windows labeled "JVM included".
- Launch Gallery Remote on your PC. In the "Destination Gallery" box, click "Add Gallery URL..."
- In the new window ("Gallery Remote Preferences"), click the "New..." button.
- Fill in the following information, replacing the text below with your information as
necessary, then click "OK".
Alias: Butler Island Gallery
Username: YourUsername
Password: YourPassword
Gallery Type: Standalone
Gallery URL: http://www.butlerisland.org/gallery
- Click on "Upload" in the left part of the "Gallery Remote Preferences" window then check
off "Resize before upload", choose "Album default", and check off "Read EXIF from JPEG files
to auto-rotate images".
- Click the "OK" button in the "Gallery Remote Preferences" window which should now have a
listing that says "Butler Island Gallery".
- In the "Destination Gallery" box in Gallery Remote, click "Log in". This will log you
into the Gallery application on the website so you can upload photos. When it's done, you
should see the existing albums listed in the "Albums" pane. One of them will be
"Summer 2004".
- If you want to create a new album, click the "New Album..." button (**Only possible if
your account has been given privileges to create new albums per Step 1D. If you need to
create a new album and we have not given you permission within a day or two of your registration,
contact us.
Once you have registered, you may still add photos to existing albums, however. Skip
to the next step). You can make your new album a sub-album to another album (for example
if there was a big event on the island and 5 of us took pictures we might all create
sub-albums of a parent event album so they weren't all mixed together.) I generally make
the Album Title and Album Name the same thing. The title is the human readable thing
people will see in the Gallery on the website, and the Album Name is used to create a URL
direct to the new album (for example Summer2004 is the Album Name for the first album, and
you can reach it with this URL/Web address: "http://www.butlerisland.org/gallery/Summer2004").
"Album Description" is the text that everyone will see that describes the album like you
see on this page: http://www.butlerisland.org/gallery/.
Click the "OK" button when you are satisfied with your entries. Now you will see your new
album show up in the list of Albums in the Album pane.
- Now the fun part: adding photos. Here's where you should do what is easiest for you on
your computer. Windows users can open Windows Explorer to the folder where their photos
are, and then literally drag and drop the pictures onto the name of the album you want to
put them in, or you can click the "Add Pictures" button in Gallery Remote and navigate your
hard drive to where your photos are and add them that way.
- When you are ready, click "Upload pictures". This will send them to the server -- then
you can admire your work on the website!
You really can't break it, so even if something doesn't go the way you expect, don't worry we
can always fix it later.
